Renting a license-free boat is one of the easiest, most freeing things you can do on a trip near Athens — no certificate, no experience needed. That freedom comes with a little responsibility, and the good news is that staying safe is mostly common sense. Follow these seven tips and your day on the Athens Riviera will be as relaxed as it should be.

1. Check the weather before you go
Conditions on the water change faster than on land. Check the forecast for wind and sea state, not just sunshine. A flat, calm morning is ideal — and remember that in the Saronic Gulf the breeze often freshens in the afternoon, so plan your longer crossings earlier in the day. At Nausora Boats we keep an eye on conditions and will tell you honestly if it's not a good day to go out — and if it isn't safe, you won't be charged.
2. Listen carefully to your briefing
Before you set off, we walk you through the boat and the area — where the shallow patches, rocks, and any protected zones are, and sensible boundaries for your day. This briefing is the single most useful five minutes of your trip. Ask anything you're unsure about; that's exactly what it's for.
3. Understand the kill switch — and clip it on
The kill switch stops the engine instantly if the driver leaves the helm or falls overboard. It connects to you by a lanyard. Always clip it to your wrist or before you start the engine. It's one simple click, and it can prevent a runaway boat — the most important safety habit on board.
4. Know your safety equipment and capacity
Before leaving the dock, locate the life jackets (essential for children and weaker swimmers) and the first-aid and emergency kit. Know the boat's maximum capacity and never exceed it — overloading hurts stability. Our boats comfortably seat up to six.
5. Stay alert and keep a lookout
Driving a boat needs your attention. Watch for other boats, swimmers, and obstacles, and put the phone away while you're at the helm. Slow right down near the shore, in narrow spots, and anywhere busy.
6. Never drive under the influence
Alcohol and boats don't mix — impaired judgment and slower reactions are dangerous on the water, and it's against the law. If your group plans to enjoy a drink at a swim stop, keep a sober driver for the journey.
7. Respect swimmers and swimming zones
Swimming areas are usually marked with buoys. Keep well clear of swimmers and other boats, follow right-of-way and speed rules, and avoid throwing a big wake near the shore or other vessels.
Relax — you've got this
None of this is complicated, and you won't be on your own: every Nausora renter gets a full hands-on safety and handling briefing before departure, so even first-timers feel confident from the moment they leave the dock. Prepare a little, stay aware, and the sea takes care of the rest.
