Seeing the Temple of Poseidon From the Water: A Self-Drive Boat Day on the Athens Riviera

Most visitors see the Temple of Poseidon the same way — by tour bus, from the car park, jostling for the same photo at sunset. There's a better way: you see it from the sea.

From the deck of your own boat, the temple rises on its clifftop exactly as ancient sailors saw it for 2,500 years — the first sign of Athens for ships coming home, and the last they saw on the way out. It's one of the most memorable things you can do near Athens, and because we launch so close to Cape Sounion, you can do it on a licence-free boat you drive yourself.

Why this trip is special from Anavyssos

Here's the part the big Athens marinas can't offer. Most boat rentals in Athens leave from Alimos, near the city — which is a long way north of Cape Sounion. We launch from Anavyssos, on the southern tip of the Athens Riviera, which is one of the closest launch points to the Temple of Poseidon by sea.

That means the temple isn't a far-off, all-day mission. It's a realistic, beautiful coastal cruise on a calm day — the kind of trip a licence-free 30hp boat is perfectly suited to. You travel down a quiet, dramatic coastline, with the option to stop and swim wherever the water tempts you.

What you'll see along the way

The route south from Anavyssos toward Sounion is pure Athens Riviera: pale cliffs, hidden coves, and that impossibly clear Saronic Gulf water. Depending on conditions and how you plan your day, highlights include:

  • Quiet swim stops in coves between Anavyssos and Sounion that are far easier to reach by boat than by road.

  • Patroklos Island, the uninhabited islet lying just off Cape Sounion, with sheltered water for a swim.

  • The approach to Cape Sounion itself, where the temple comes into view high on the headland — the photo of the trip.

Do you need a licence or experience? No.

This is a self-drive trip with no boat licence required. Our Poseidon Blue Water 170 runs a beginner-friendly 30hp engine, so as long as the driver is 18 or over, you're free to captain your own day. Before you set off you'll get a full handling and safety briefing, so even first-timers feel comfortable at the wheel.

If you'd rather not drive at all — or you want to push further and faster — we also offer skippered motorboat charters with a local captain who knows every cove on this coast.

How to plan your day

  • Go on a calm day. This is a coastal cruise, and a flat sea makes it effortless and safe. If the weather turns, we reschedule at no charge.

  • Start earlier rather than later if you want to combine the temple with a few swim stops.

  • Bring sun shade (our boats have a sunroof/bimini and a freshwater shower), water, snacks, and a camera.

  • Fuel is charged separately from the rental, so factor that in.

  • Consider finishing your day with a meal at one of the seaside tavernas back near Anavyssos.

Make it the highlight of your trip

A self-drive boat day to the Temple of Poseidon is the rare thing that's genuinely unforgettable and genuinely easy. No licence, no crowds, no tour-bus schedule — just your own boat, an ancient temple on the horizon, and the whole Athens Riviera to swim in.

Our licence-free boats in Anavyssos seat up to six and start from 160 per day.
